I felt it was easier to see where Kafka's point of view in the story was coming from after reading "Franz Kafka: A Chronology." It states that he had 5 brothers and sisters die during his childhood. I think the feeling of being alone that gregor had can relate to what Kafka may have went through as a child.
After doing some research on Freudian Psychology I came to realize that it played a major role in Kafka's "The Metamorphosis". Freudian Psychology suggests that all human behavior is driven by the unconscious mind, an entity we are not aware of that determines how we feel, think, and act. When you think about it Gregor's life really is like a bug's: 1) He's underappreciated, 2) constantly overworked, and 3) has absolutely no time for himself. Gregor’s unconscious mind already felt like an insignificant bug, so my interpretation is that it ended up turning him into one.
